Memorial Box Monday ~ The Nest: Part II

Memorial Box Monday was started by my dear friend Linny @ A Place Called Simplicity, she explains what a Memorial Box is here.

Just as the children of Israel set stones as Memorials to remind them of the mighty things the Lord had done for them, we put tangible items into our Memorial Box, to represent and remind us, of the many times the Lord has moved on our behalf. And just as the Israelites passed down the stories of God's provision to their children, and their children's children--we will use our Memorial Box to teach and remind our children of God's great faithfulness to our family, and his personal love for us!

Memorial Box Monday ~ The Nest: Part II

If you missed my Memorial Box Monday post, "The Nest" you can find it here. In this original post I told of the Lord sending a precious pair of swallows to our front porch where they began to build a nest, just as we were wrapping up our long wait for Teddi. Upon our arrival home from China (with our fifth bird) we would find that five, brand new baby birds had hatched to Mr. & Mrs. Swallow. A year later, the Lord would bring my feathered friends back again, as we were wrapping up wedding preparations for my Taylor girl--ministering to my heart, as I prepared to let my big girl fly. This year, as spring rolled around again, my pair returned, and mama bird was soon sitting in her old familiar spot. Once again, life would find me preparing to let go of another bird, and this is where my story left off. . .

May would find us celebrating Brady's graduation from high school. It would also find this same 18 year old packing up and preparing to move to Spokane, to live with big brother. My mama's heart was aching as I prepared myself to say good bye to my "first" baby, the youngest of my "bigs". He was ready to fly, and he was going to do so in a big "2,000 miles away" way.

Mama swallow, during this time, hatched her brood of four.

I watched them grow, from naked little things-- with beaks that seemed bigger than their bodies . . . on to puffy little chirpers--covered in the fluffiest of down. The fluff was temporary though, as they soon sported sleek feathers, now looking much like their mama and daddy.

They had begun to sit on the edge of the nest . . .

yet still looked to mom and dad for a little support.

At this point we were exactly one week from Brady's scheduled departure. I don't know about others who have experienced this, but those last few days are to me, more agonizing than the actual good-bye. The days slip away one by one, and with each passing day, you wonder how on earth you will ever. let. go.

And then the Lord provided a distraction from that "letting go" ache.

My little birds began, one by one, to turn around
on the nest's edge, and try their wings.

"Hey, where did he go?"

"He's down there, with dad."

"Watch me now . . .

you can do it!"

"Flap hard . . .

now fly strong!"

"YES!"

A successful first flight. So pretty and proud.

And so it was, that as I prepared my heart, the Lord would show me a successful flight-- taken by His smallest creatures, over and over again. If He cared enough to orchestrate this little event of nature just for me, how much more capable was He of orchestrating Brady's first flight?

My third bird, Brady, flew away, exactly one week after that first baby bird's first flight. He is flying strong in Spokane. I couldn't be prouder. (I love you Brady.)

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
~ Mathew 6:25-26 NIV ~

I must tell you that the nest was barely empty before Mrs. Swallow began sitting again. Two weeks later, there were four new babies to watch. They have grown quickly over the past couple of weeks . . .

and this morning, after I had begun writing this post (that I had pondered for weeks), those little ones began to turn around on the nest's edge. Mid morning I went outside to water flowers, before the extreme heat of the afternoon set in. About halfway through my watering I heard some serious chattering and chirping going on. I looked up to see my baby birds circling in flight, they were low, and directly above me. The Lord was putting on a show, because He loves me like that. He loves you like that too--in ways you cannot even comprehend!

Into our Memorial Box will go this little box full of fluffy
feathers, collected from my front porch.

A forever reminder that the Lord is the soother of our aching hearts-- and that He is always, always with us, cheering us on to fly high . . . and giving us the strength to soar!

Thank you Lord, that You know every single detail of our hearts. Hearts that You designed, hearts that you encourage, hearts that you long to see soar. Thank you for flying lessons Lord, thank you for picking us up when we fall, and for cheering us on when we soar, and for grace always--no matter what.

Blessings from my nest~

and join in the fun--by Saturday night (June 26th)!
You might just find yourself sportin'
a new pair of TOMS!

And while I have your attention I just have to share a little bit about the Newly's most recent adventures . . .

If you have been around for awhile you will remember me blogging about the Newly's living off of a Children's Hunger Fund Food Pak, for a week, in their very newly days. They had shopped for and filled several of these boxes for CHF, and decided the best way to see what it would be like to be the recipient of one of these boxes, would be to eat only from what was in the box--for a week. And they did.

They blogged about this adventure, and word got out. So last month, when Fred Martin, the Communications Coordinator for CHF, was traveling to San Antonio (from his California based position), he asked the San Antonio director to see if she could get a hold of Taylor and Frankie. Mr. Martin was coming to town to work on a new video for CHF, and he wanted to interview the Newly's about their Food Pak experience-- for the video. And he did just that! It was a wonderful experience for the Newlys, and it made this mama proud. You can read about the Newly's food pak adventures here. They actually did this twice, the second time around they ate solely from the box for TWO weeks. Currently they live on a $10 a week grocery budget, by choice. Yes, ten dollars. If you want to see how, jump over and look for their "Menu Monday" posts.

I have to share one more story, and God gets the glory . . .

On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend the Newly's held a Yard Sale at Frankie's grandma's home, they had simplified, and had many things to get rid of. I had also simplified (and need to do more of it) and had donated my "treasures" as well. Frankie's mom and sister also added treasures to the sale inventory.

To back up a bit . . . The Newly's have set a goal for themselves, a hefty goal. To buy a well. A $5,000 well, through Charity:Water. Their Yard Sale was to add some "drops" to their water jar, and that it did . . .

In their own words (I swiped this from their blog) --

To say our yard sale went pretty well would be an understatement. We did a little research on when would be a good time to have it, even though our date was pretty much set, we wanted to know our odds.
Rule #1: Have your sale after payday. Oops.

Rule #2: Never have it on a holiday weekend, people travel. Strike two.

But, we prayed, and moms prayed, and aunts and cousins prayed... and we had God up to bat for us- GRAND SLAM! Our God is not a God of rules and statistics, thank goodness! We had our very first customer at 6:30 am and it didn't slow down until around 12:15! We were consistently busy (but never overwhelmed)! After that things slowed down, but we still had constant bursts of people, with never more than about 5 minutes in between. We sold and sold and sold! At the end of the day we had raised a wonderful $521.23! Not bad considering that our biggest item was priced at only $15!

Seriously, the most expensive item they sold was an old loveseat, for $15.00. Does God bless a sale when it means thirsty people will someday drink clean, life-giving water? I would say YES!

He blesses our efforts abundantly when we do what He calls us to do!

I'm proud of you Taylor and Frankie, for walking out what God has called you to. For living life sacrificially.

Your lives, lived with less, not only honor the Lord, but are life saving for others. Thank you.

It is a good, good thing when the child you have trained up, grows ups, and sets a beautiful example for you, as the parent, to follow. A good, good thing.

Blessings from my thankful, and hoping to win a new pair of shoes, nest ~

Rejoicing!

My heart is singing on this summer Monday,

and the angels are rejoicing . . .

Brogan and Teddi prayed at bedtime last night . . .

to ask Jesus INTO their hearts!

It was a perfect ending to Father's Day!

Thank you Jesus, that my babies are forever yours!

Happy Father's Day!

Is there any better place to be . . .

than beside your dad . . .

his strong arm around you . . .

holding you close . . .

wrapped up securely . . .

in his love?

Thank you Bry for five precious reasons to celebrate Father's Day!
Thank you for the love that you show,
the security you provide,
the wisdom you share.

Thank you that because of your example,
our children are learning
what it is like
to love and to trust their heavenly Father,
and to receive His love in return.

Happy Father's Day!
We love you!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Thank you to my own daddy . . .

for his unconditional love.
{I love you daddy.}

And to my father-in-love. I truly could not ask for a better one.

(Aren't they all so handsome?)

Thank you Lord for these three, strong, blessings that I have in my life.

Thank you Lord, on Father's Day, for being my heavenly Father, and for loving me with an agape love, forever.

Thank you Lord, that on this day, and every day, You are a Father to the fatherless.

Celebrating Brady

I'm so far behind, but I do hope to make my blog into a book (or several books) some day, so I want to get our important family events recorded.

My apologies to Brady for the tardiness of this post.

The Graduation Announcement

Pictures from "party day" . . .

the traditional sign.

"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education."
--Albert Einstein

A quote that describes my,
I would much rather learn by experience than by books, boy-- to a T!

The Diploma . . . and the cheesecake.

Opening a big surprise--in the form of a new camera.

Very proud mom and dad . . .

and siblings.

Our graduate!

To my Brady,

It was a long road coming, not without bumps (and perhaps even a ditch or two), but you never gave up. Not all of it was a traditional education, and there were things that dad and I could have done better. Much better. But you hung in, despite our failings. You learned, despite our shortcomings--and through this experience we are all wiser. What seems like the end, is really a great new beginning!

I love the way you tackle life head on Brady. I love the way that once you decide to do something, you do it, and you do it well. You wanted to play guitar, so you bought a guitar (okay, more than one), and you taught yourself to play. Day after day, one chord at a time, until you were making music.

You wanted to buy a keyboard, a big, expensive piano length keyboard. I said, "That's a lot of money . . . you don't know how to play piano, do you? Are you sure?"

"Are you really sure?"

You worked and you saved, and you worked some more, and you saved some more. You researched, and then you shopped for the very best deal, and you bought that piano! You hauled it home, you set it up, and you played it. And I don't mean you "tapped a tune", you played it. I was proud, and amazed . . . and I ate my words.

Yes, indeed. When you put your mind to something, you own it. I love that about you Brady. When your car needs fixed, you research, you self-teach, and you fix it. When you are in the market for a new amp, you learn everything there is to know about many amps, you make your choice, and then begin the hunt for the best buy. And you don't stop until you find it.

Once you decided you were moving to Spokane it was a done deal. I know there were times when the whole thing was overwhelming to you, and to me. But, you had made your decision--this was the path you were going to follow for now, and you followed it.

Today, you start a new job. In a new city. You are making friends, you are looking for ministries to get involved in. You are writing music. You are living life, often all on your own--as Bryce is gone for long stretches. You are once again doing exactly what you have set your mind to do.

You are brave.

And as your mama . . .

I am proud.

You are flying, my original baby bird. Flying high.

I love you so very much, I miss you like crazy, but I am so proud of you for spreading your wings.

Happy Graduation!

Love, Mom

Love That Face!

I was just reading over a newsletter from RainbowKids.com when suddenly today's date caught my eye. It was on this very day, three years ago, that I received my very first email, with waiting children in Asia, from RainbowKids. I had just signed up to receive their emails the previous Friday night.

In that very first email was the face of our waiting daughter . . .

is God's timing perfect, or what?

What had started out as a regular old Monday, quickly became the day I had been praying for--for eight years. I made a call to the agency that had Teddi's file, and I spoke with them for about 45 minutes. By the time I hung up, our sweet girl was "on hold"-- as in OUR name was on HER file. That night we read over Zhu Fu Xiao's information, we prayed, we rejoiced, and the next morning as soon as the agency opened for the day, we said YES!

The rest is history!

Oh how we love you, our Zhu Fu Xiao, our precious Teddi girl! God certainly had a treasure waiting for us at the end of that Monday afternoon rainbow. Oh how we praise Him for bringing us YOU!

Blessings from my ever grateful nest~

Tina . . . who is headed for Houston this evening with daddy bird, to scoop up her little birds, and bring them back to this (temporarily) quiet nest. I miss 'em!

My Quiet Nest

This is my nest this week . . .

it's just us . . .

smiling,
soaking in the peace,
eating out,
watching movies,
catching up with one another . . .
us

but there is a nest in Houston . . .

that has temporarily
increased its occupants and its noise level . . .

The Newlys are hosting The Littles for the week.

Life is sweet.

Thank you Newlys.

With all of this time on my hands you would think I would be catching up on all of the blogging I am behind on . . . B's graduation, T-ball, The Little's end of school activities, a trip to Sea World (which is where the above pic was taken), The Newly's latest amazing achievement, Memorial Box Mondays . . .

but no . . .

it hasn't happened . . .

I am a blogger way behind.

I have at least three posts started, in draft . . .

but that really doesn't give anyone much to read, does it?

I have however been simplifying around here. As in getting.rid.of.stuff. It feels good.

I have also swapped Brady's empty bedroom, which was originally Taylor's bedroom, for the guest room. The guest room is now a very inviting play space, and my sunroom (the original play space) is now reclaimed as a computer/kid's arts and crafts space. This took some doing, and I owe a thank you to my Taylor and to my sweet hubby for their help in all of the rearranging that took place last week!

Two weeks ago I also laid a pallet of sod (with a little neighborly help), while the above mentioned sweet husband was out of town. I don't know if you have ever laid sod, but it doesn't wait for out of town husbands to return. So when the base delivered it, I put my muscles on and started putting it down . . . 17 pound piece, by 17 pound piece, by 17 pound piece . . . in 90 degree+ weather. No fun. No fun at all. Our yard thanks me, it likes its new look. So do I.

This past weekend we did some more landscaping. Much more fun when Bry is using his muscle, and I am the one saying let's put that here . . . and let's put that there. Our yard is finally looking respectable again after last years awful Texas drought.

Oh yes, and this week, with my Littles gone (and Bry at work), I have slept in. Way in. I had forgotten what that was like. I'm sure most of you reading this have forgotten what that is like too. I wish I could share a little peace with you. It's nice, very nice.

For those of you wondering, Brady is doing well in Spokane. He has applied for several jobs, and has had a couple of interviews. Wal*mart called him back on Monday with an offer, they want to hire him as a cashier. He's waiting on a background check, and is scheduled for orientation next Tuesday. He will be making more than he'd been making cashiering here in Texas for the last 18 months (and that was with raises), so it'll work for now. He's not crazy about Wal*mart, but he's ready to be part of the work force again, so this is good! I'm proud of you Brady!

Some China sweetness . . . my heart has soared this past week to see my friends Suzette and Alycia both welcome their long awaited Chinese treasures into their arms! Sweet Lia and Adahlyn are orphans no more. You can see darling Lia here, she has been smiling since her Gotcha moment, I kid you not--and so has her big sister Tia. Go see for yourself! Alycia's blog is private so you will have to take my word for it when I say Adahlyn (almost five) is sweetness in motion. Her mama says she moves like a tornado, this brings back memories of my Flit in China! I have three other friends who have waited very, very, very long for their Chinese daughters, and all three have finally received Travel Approval, and all three will travel this month. Thank you Jesus that very soon, Ruby Caroline, Mercy Faith, and Franceska Danielle will be orphans no more! Suzette, Alycia, Amy, Carol and Kristy, I rejoice with you my friends!

I guess I should wrap these ramblings up. I'm not making any promises, but I am going to try to get back to some sort of routine blogging. Wait a minute. My blogging has never been routine--let's say I shoot for something a little more than my weekly Wordless Wednesday posts-- that shouldn't be too hard to surpass.

See you soon to my Newlys and Littles, and love to my Spokane boys.

Blessings from my quiet (for two more days) nest ~
